PRIDE MONTH

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of diversity and inclusion in clinical research trials. However, potential enrollees who identify with the LGBTQIA community have often been overlooked in these efforts. This is particularly concerning given the significant health disparities that members of this community face, including higher rates of HIV/AIDS, mental health issues, and certain types of cancer. By failing to assure engagement of the LGBTQIA community in clinical research trials, we are essentially creating notable data deficits, and limiting access to potentially life-saving treatments and therapies.

During PRIDE month, it is important to have an open discussion about the necessity of including the LGBTQIA community in all types of clinical research trials. Sienna Moriarty and Liam Pascall, two special guest panelists, will provide valuable insights into why this inclusion is important, as well as the consequences of excluding the LGBTQIA community. Through this discussion, we hope to raise awareness and promote action towards greater real-world diversity and inclusion in clinical research trials, ultimately improving the health outcomes of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

We encourage individuals to join and submit questions in our Clinical Trials OBQ LinkedIn Group  before the event, as this will help shape the conversation and ensure that we address the most pressing concerns and issues related to LGBTQIA inclusion in clinical research trials. By working together and promoting greater diversity and inclusion, we can ensure that all individuals have access to the best possible healthcare and treatment options, regardless of their background or identity.

"Why is it important to include the LBGTQIA+ community in ALL clinical research trials?"

Panelists:

Liam Paschall (He/Him) - Transgender Inclusion Speaker and Consultant

Sienna Moriarty (They/Them), Project Manager - Cardiac Safety

Mental health disorders are often poorly understood at the molecular level, making it difficult to develop targeted and effective treatments. Though Medication is the standard of care for most psychiatric conditions, many of the drugs used to treat mental illness have significant adverse reactions and side effects. Pharmacogenomics has the potential to improve the design and execution of mental health clinical trials, leading to more effective treatments and better outcomes for individuals with mental health conditions.

Join us for a lively discussion with guests Behnaz Sarrami MS, PharmD (Host PGx for Pharmacists), Reem Yunis, Ph.D. (Medable) and Paul Simmons (DBSA CA) as we discuss this month's OBQ:

Thursday, July 7, 2022 | 10:30 AM – 12:00 NOON PT

After our Clinical Trials OBQ last month, we submitted a crowdsourced response to FDA’s April 2022 draft guidance regarding Diversity in Clinical Trials. Our next aim is to start to define success in this endeavor by examining JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion) in Clinical Trials. For July, let’s start with Justice. How can clinical trial design and operation ensure equitable patient selection, uphold patients’ rights and improve data transparency?

"In the last month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued new draft guidance to industry for developing plans to enroll more participants from underrepresented racial and ethnic populations in the U.S. into clinical trials.

This draft guidance, “Diversity Plans to Improve Enrollment of Participants from Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Subgroups in Clinical Trials,” is really the first (mandate?) call to action to sponsors to remedy a long-standing issue. How do you see this changing what sponsors, sites, and patient recruiters will need to do? What upsides do you see?"

Clinical Trials Clubhouse: One Burning Question (OBQ) 🔥

Thursday, April 7, 2022 | 10:30 AM – 12:00 NOON PT

"Our past month's lively discussion regarding equitable and effective compensation for trial enrollment has particular application to the category of Sickle Cell Anemia trials. Published research suggests general barriers to health-related research in Sickle Cell (general mistrust of research studies, emotional and practical concerns), barriers to trial design (randomization, geographic outreach, community dialogue), and mistrust of specific therapies and agents are blockades to successful enrollment. Considering this important disease focus, how can clinical trialists and patients create better pathways to moving new medicines and procedures forward for patients with Sickle Cell Anemia?”

Clinical Trials Clubhouse: One Burning Question (OBQ) 🔥

Thursday, March 3, 2022 | 10:30 AM – 12:00 NOON PT

Most patients and researchers agree that clinical trial enrollees, particularly those in Real World Evidence (RWE) and complex individual data collection trials, should be compensated (not just reimbursed) for trial participation.

How can trial participants be fairly compensated so that a broader, more diverse population enrolls while creating real equity, particularly around the use of personal data?

What is "fair compensation"?

HBA San Diego presents
What is the Data Economy in Healthcare and What Does it Mean for you?

Date and time
Wednesday, 2 March (rescheduled from 19 January)
12:00PM - 01:30PM PST

Location
Virtual
Corporations and healthcare organizations have access to and use individual data to advance health research and product development that has a high value to society. What if individuals could participate in the resulting "data economy" by claiming and controlling their contributions to the world and get paid for doing so? Putting control back in the hands—and money in the pockets—of the rightful owners, the individual, advances equity.

Join HBA San Diego and a stellar lineup of panelists to explore the elements involved with this emerging trend in healthcare.

Agenda
12:00-12:15 PM Introduction
12:15-1:00 PM Panel Discussion
1:00-1:30 PM Q&A
